Mile 91 Access Bridge

Overview

This project delivered a complete temporary access solution, including the transport and installation of a temporary 100-foot bridge and access matting to provide safe, reliable site access for our client. The bridge was mobilized in two sections—an 80-foot span and a 20-foot span—and efficiently assembled on site using a winch truck and picker.

Once secured, the fully assembled bridge was launched into place with precision and installed to meet operational requirements. Wooden deck panels were then installed, creating a durable, equipment-ready crossing and access mats were placed for foundations, ballast wall, and ramp up to the bridge. The result was a seamless access solution that supported safe movement, minimized downtime, and kept the project on schedule.

GNB supplied all matting services for the project, including both the matting materials and full installation.

Project Details

Client: Arnett and Burgess / ConocoPhillips

Location: Mile 91, Alaska Highway

Completion: December 4, 2025

Delivery: Completed on time

The Challenge

The primary challenge was gaining access to a site that required a clear-span crossing in order to move equipment back and forth safely. Winter conditions added another layer of complexity, as the excavator required metal corks for traction on ice. However, these corks posed a risk of damaging the wooden bridge deck.

Our Solutions

To address the access challenge, the 80-foot and 20-foot bridge sections were bolted together on site and launched as a single 100-foot span. A secondary access point was available at another river crossing, which allowed equipment to be brought across efficiently before final installation.

To protect the bridge deck, the excavator was driven on tires while crossing the bridge, eliminating the risk of damage from metal corks and ensuring the integrity of the deck panels.

Technical Highlights

  • Temporary 100-foot bridge created by bolting together 80-foot and 20-foot sections
  • Use of winch truck, picker, and excavator for assembly and installation
  • Installation of wooden bridge deck panels
  • Full access matting supplied and installed by GNB

Lasting Impact

The completed bridge provided the client with safe, dependable access to the site for the duration of their operations. This temporary solution enabled uninterrupted work while maintaining safety standards and protecting both equipment and infrastructure.
